Coorg or Kodagu as it is known now is an astonishing land in the heart of the southern Indian peninsula. This un spoilt land of million hills is situated on the slops of the western ghats, is now India’s coffee bowl. A tiny district in the state of Karnataka, Coorg is the biggest producer of coffee in India. The British who colonized Coorg and set up coffee plantations prior to independence compared Coorg to Scotland. Both these places have grand and regal highlands with sturdy mountains. The race/community of people dwelling here is called Kodava, known for their bravery and valour.

Coorg is located in the south-western part of Karnataka bordering Kerala. Its maximum length is 96 km (north-south) and breadth 64 km (east-west). The area of the district is 4102.3 sq. km. The population estimated in 2001 was 545,322, increasing 11.64% from 1991 to 2001, and 5.75% from 1981 to 1991.

Kodagu district (formerly Coorg) is situated among the rich coffee estates in the western ghats of India. The district headquarter Madikeri (formerly Mercara) can be easily reached by boarding a state transport bus from Bangalore or Mysore. Madikeri is a very little known beautiful hill station with many breathtaking spots located around.

The prominent peaks ain Coorg are Kote Betta, Pushpagiri, Nishani Motte, Tumbe Male. Tadiyandamol (1750 m), Soma Male and Brahmagiri. Coorg is the largest producer of Coffee in India. Pepper, Cardamom and oranges are grown extensively in this part.

Coorg is one of the major places that get heavy rainfall in India. If you want to experience Monsoon rains, you will like the peaceful setting here. The best season to visit Coorg is anytime. The climate is usually very pleasant all around the year.
